Stop, If I Should Lose, People Gotta Move, Slow Love e Tierra de amores y Sombras (due brani del recente cd Slow
Never Sleep), Wild Horses, Powerful People, King For a Day, Crazy Life, Brother to Brother (da uno dei suoi primi

THE MESSENGER Rome Chronicle 07/08/2000

The Italian-Canadian singer-songwriter will be in concert tonight with his band at the Music Village in Tor di Valle
Vannelli, the music
of the imagination.

by FABRIZIO ZAMPA

A flavorful mix of pop, rock, jazz, and soul, peppered with a healthy dash of funk, a voice that can move across multiple
genres, 15 albums under his belt, multiple Grammy nominations, a solid and close-knit band that produces highly
advanced sounds without losing sight of the style—or rather, the multifaceted style—of the leader: this is the music of Gino Vannelli, a
48-year-old Canadian from Montreal of Italian descent, a singer and songwriter, but also a poet and philosopher. He began playing
drums as a boy, studied music at McGill University, and can play several instruments.
Tonight, Gino Vannelli and his band (saxophonist François D’Amours, bassist Alain Caron, percussionist Luc
Boivin, drummer Paul Brochu, all from Quebec; keyboardist Mario Luciani, from Toronto; pianist and keyboardist David
Golblat, from Los Angeles) are coming to the Music Village in Tor di Valle for a concert that promises to be a truly heated one.
The setlist includes songs like “Black Cars” (also the title of a 1985 album on which he played several instruments), “I Just Wanna
Stop,” “If I Should Lose,” “People Gotta Move,” “Slow Love,” and “Tierra de amores y Sombras” (two songs from his recent album, “Slow
Love,” the second in Spanish), “Living Inside Myself,” “Persona non grata” (a fusion song from his album, “Big Dreamers
Never Sleep”), “Wild Horses,” “Powerful People,” “King For a Day,” “Crazy Life,” “Brother to Brother” (from one of his early
albums, 1978), and so on: a mixed salad drawn from various albums like “Yonder Tree,” “Inconsolable Man,” and
“Nightwalker.
” How would you define Vannelli’s vocals? First and foremost engaging, then refined, disenchanted, driven by passion and
a love for music: a voice that blends romance and fantasy, equally suited to upbeat songs and
ballads, and willing to explore many different avenues because “music is a path that can take you anywhere, and
the important thing is to take it with body and soul, regardless of the destination.” Besides being talented and a perfectionist, he has
a great sense of humor, making his concerts fun. Give him a try.
