PALMI /REGGIO C. – A delightful mix of pop, rock, jazz, soul, and a touch of funk. Fifteen albums under his belt, multiple Grammy nominations, and a voice that spans diverse genres: we’re talking about Gino Vannelli, an Italian-Canadian singer and songwriter, a modern master of romanticism who will perform his Slow Love tour this evening (9 pm) at the “Lo Presti” municipal stadium in Palmi. The tour’s title comes from Vannelli’s latest album, an album that tells stories of love and whose performance undoubtedly confirms the extraordinary talent of this singer-songwriter. “If you listen to my older albums and then Slow Love,” Gino Vannelli declared during the press conference held by Ibis Management last night at the Grand Hotel de La Ville, “you’ll see how much my approach and techniques have changed.” The result is one of Vannelli’s finest albums , in an already legendary career that has seen him continually explore new modes of expression: tender and focused songs, born of a poetic talent and entrusted to a charismatic voice. Legendary albums like Pauper in Paradise and Brother to Brother (the latter earned him a platinum record for the famous “I Just Wanna Stop”), all the way to Black Cars, Big Dreams Never Sleep, and Inconsolable Man, which have inspired the dreams of his many fans who will have the pleasure of hearing him live tonight.
Thirty years of music performed at the highest levels through a stylistic journey that, despite evolving in sound, has never betrayed his poetic vein and, above all, the very aesthetics of Vannelli’s refined musical vision. “My father shined shoes and was very good at it,” the artist says. “So, he passed down to me the legacy of being, in my field, a true craftsman. “I don’t know Italian artists very well, but in the future I’d like to explore the possibility of collaborating with them,” adds Vannelli, while explaining his next recording project, which will feature the help of Pino Daniele. “I’ll produce and arrange a Nils Landoke album, which will include, among other things, a song sung in Italian entitled ‘Parole per mio padre.’ “He and I had unfinished business,” Gino Vannelli confesses, “and I thought about resolving them with a song. For the lyrics, I sent a four-page essay to Pino Daniele to come up with something truly worthy. Pino didn’t hold back, and I’m sure the result will be excellent.” Meanwhile, Vannelli is working on another truly ambitious project: arranging and setting to music an opera that is currently taking up a lot of his time.
Finally, on September 23, he is already expected in Holland for a concert as part of the “Roosendaalse Jazzfestival,” together with the Metropole Orchestra.
