VANNELLI, A JUGGLER BALANCED BETWEEN JAZZ AND ROCK

In the concert at Tendastriscie he proposed his greatest hits

         by Ernesto Assante

Gino Vannelli’s star had seemed to be fading for a few years. His records hadn’t had the same success as in their golden years, and in fact his first two Italian concerts, the one on Sunday evening in Rome and the one last night in Milan, were scheduled in two rather small venues. Surprisingly, however, the public demand for the Canadian musician’s two concerts was overwhelming, and both evenings were moved to two theatres capable of holding a larger audience, such as the Tendastriscie in Rome, where Vannelli gathered more than three thousand enthusiastic people.

The concert he gave was certainly interesting and intriguing, because the Canadian musician is not a traditional pop artist; on the contrary, it would be more accurate to define him as a champion of sung fusion, a very particular musical genre that blends jazz, melody, and pop into an absolutely original and often very refined whole. Those who loved his chart hits were certainly not disappointed by the Roman concert, because in the two hours of music that the singer proposed, none of them were missing, from Wild Horses to Brother to Brother, up to the final Black Cars, even if the “strong point” was not the pop songs, but rather the long spaces that Vannelli and his excellent group dedicated precisely to his most refined and complex production, where the band’s soloists find ample space, where different musical styles and genres meet, where even the sung parts often seem to pursue subtle and elusive structures. Of course, you have to love the genre to escape boredom, even if Vannelli has all the qualities of a luxury entertainer, gifted with a great voice, a spectacular if often exaggerated stage presence, and an extremely rich repertoire, which ranges from slow and sentimental songs to music that moves on the edges of certain consumer jazz. In short, he is good, and even if his music is more spectacular than profound, it stands out from the great sea of
today’s pop for the elegance and intelligence of his musical solutions, perhaps a little dated but still original.
