MILANO .

The Italian-Canadian pop artist in Milan

VANNELLI: << Ricanto after the convent >>

by Luca Dondoni

MILAN. Gino Vannelli, 39, Canadian by birth but Italian by origin, is a paragon of
humility and artistic longevity. He recently released a live album entitled  Live, which collects some of the most beautiful songs produced in 19 years of activity. He has also returned to sing in Europe. Monday evening at City Square in Milan, Vannelli enchanted the 1,500 people who packed Vasco Rossi’s club (in Rome the night before he had gathered 3,000 people at the Teatro Tendastriscie). In two hours of music, he told a story that has positioned him since the beginning as a skilled mediator between jazz-fusion and the easiest melodic pop, represented by songs like ” Living Inside Myself “. Performing with the artist were his brother Joe, the new guitarist Thony Patrick, the black backing vocalist Lyn Davis Blythe and the drummer Enzo Todesco. A truly good ensemble, which produced clean and refined sounds. Among the audience were Eros Ramazzotti, Francesca Alotta who won Sanremo with Aleandro Baldi, Jo Squillo, Mario Lavezzi, Rossana Casale and numerous exponents of the Milanese record industry.

Gino Vannelli explained why he returned to singing live after 12 years away from the stage:
<<At a certain point in my career I asked myself many questions. Who I was, why I existed and above all if the religious belief that had been taught to me by my parents satisfied my need for truth. To try to understand I began studying philosophy, theology again, even going to live in the convents of Benedictine and Buddhist friars>>.

The last studio album released before this  Live  and entitled Inconsolable Man achieved good sales results even in countries where the Canadian musician’s records did not sell a single copy. After this tour, the recording of a new album is already planned.
