Black Cars Interview – Ciao 2001

RIVISTA MUSICALE  CIAO 2001         Dicembre   1984

CON  <Black Cars> GINO VANNELLI ABBANDONA IN PARTE LA FUSION MORBIDA E ROMANTICA CHE LO CARATTERIZZAVA . I RISULTATI ? BUONI ,MA LASCIAMO CHE SIA GINO A RACCONTARCI QUALCOSA DEL DISCO DELLA SUA VITA E DELLA SUA MUSICA

intervista  di Maria Laura Giulietti  a
                                                               Joe  e  Gino Vannelli

ROMA . Gino Vannelli  è arrivato a Roma .
dialetto incomprensibile parlato dai genitori.
frenetica  a Los Angeles .
completamente diverse dai precedenti lavori.
contraddistinto i suoi lavori passati.
E dell’album “NIGHTWALKER” quello dell’81,cosa ne pensi ora ?
per me.Per poter pensare.
parecchio in me ,nella mia musica .
all’argomento .
I viaggi
qualcosa d’altro? -<Sì mi piacerebbe tentare nuove strade…>-Fare l’attore.… Sì (ride),perchè no .
In America è così,
In realtà
forse soltanto noi trentenni siamo rimasti a credere in certe cose .
Rock’n’roll. Eccome.

MUSIC MAGAZINE  CIAO 2001          December 1984

Interview by Maria Laura Giulietti with
                                                               Joe and Gino Vannelli

                               WITH <<BLACK CARS>> GINO VANNELLI
PARTLY ABANDONS THE SOFT AND ROMANTIC FUSION THAT
CHARACTERIZED HIM. THE RESULTS? GOOD, BUT LET
GINO TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE ALBUM,
                               HIS LIFE, AND HIS MUSIC.

ROME . Gino Vannelli has arrived in Rome. With a flight that lasted almost twenty hours (in New York there was snow and it was impossible to land or take off) he made his crossing with great diligence and as soon as he arrived he did not miss a dinner with the undersigned. With him is his brother Joe, Gino’s true right-hand man together with the other Vannelli, Ross (which actually stands for Rossano), absent, but equally precious.

A true Italian family. Grandparents from Campobasso and some faded memories recycled from an incomprehensible dialect spoken by the parents. Everything else is a Canadian life and a not always frenetic activity in Los Angeles. Joe and Gino are on the same wavelength. The former is more technical, a keyboard player with great taste, attentive to new technological creations; the second is more emotional, a great desire to return to playing live, he loves his work like few artists I have had the opportunity to know personally driven almost by an internal frenzy. But together they are truly one, as rarely happens. And right now it is possible to notice it.

Gino has created his new album with completely different intentions from his previous works. Leaving behind a more melodic and refined repertoire, almost a fusion very tied to pop, Gino has headed into the meanders of rock with great attention to sustained and gritty rhythms. A need or a necessity? Naturally this was the first question digested
between a first and a second course and underlined by the appearance of the legendary spaghetti all’Amatriciana which really struck him in the heart (or stomach?).

Moving Forward   << Neither a need nor a necessity –
answers Gino – in reality it is important for an artist to move forward. In the last five years I have not done any   tours . And in the last three I haven’t recorded albums. I had personal problems. I was searching inside myself. So   everything was born from my desire and my curiosity. At a certain point I thought that continuing on the same  path would be a great convenience. Then I reacted and I set my mind to finding another type of goal, which I think I’ve found>> He speaks slowly and seems careful not to
express concepts indiscriminately. He wants to be clear enough not to be misunderstood.

— Working with a very intimate team like the one you built together with your brothers Joe and Ross, was it easy to find a new path that made you all agree? <<I often think I’m
lucky. And this time it went like this too: we’re united, we’re happy to be able to do this job.
Even without saying it explicitly, we found ourselves taking the same path and finding ourselves in agreement again.>>

The album in question, which, incredibly but true, was released first in Europe and then in America, is titled “BLACK CARS” and is a very sustained push forward. More modern in the structure of the songs, more daring in the rhythms, less conciliatory with certain melodic openings that have always distinguished his past works. Even the best. Even his most fortunate moment, that “BROTHER TO BROTHER” which brought him so much fame. << It’s strange, but the making of that album was very
difficult. I wasn’t very satisfied, I really liked some songs, but I had doubts. Then
when it was released it turned out to be my most successful album. It’s really incredible when this kind of thing happens. You write a song and you do it with your own special predisposition, then you record it and give it to people and it becomes theirs forever, whether they like it or hate it.>>

And what do you think of the album “NIGHTWALKER” from ’81 now? << I like it, I love it a lot, even if ever since then I was wondering what my future path would be. That’s why I took some time just for myself. To be able to think. >>

In that album there was a gem, “Santa Rosa”. Maybe it was a sign?
<< I love that song a lot, I’m attached to it and I would do it again in the same way >>

Your new album also coincides with the change of record company. Was it important to leave behind the collaborators of the time? << My previous record company didn’t take much care of my work. I often felt alone, without direction. Today I’m very happy because it seems to me that the new record companies believe a lot in me, in my music. >>

— The first time I listened to Black Cars I thought that the
change, especially in certain songs, had been too sudden. Then I began to enter the
harder and more concrete atmosphere that you had rarely proposed in your old works. What do you think your fans will say? What was their reaction -<< For now it has only been released in France, where it has been well received, and in Italy. But in
America they are waiting for it a lot and they told me that some have already bought it on import. It’s a good sign,no?>>

–Joe, as a good keyboard player in love with new instruments with great possibilities, ventures into a discussion regarding the use of such machines to achieve concrete satisfaction from the work itself. Joe – << Instruments like the DX1 or the Fairlight allow the author to not have to make a thousand attempts with a thousand instrumentalists on the resolution of a solo or an instrumental part. You just have to work with your imagination and look for the sounds you like most. Everything becomes easier. It’s like a dream come true. In short, turning an idea into reality that you always had to filter through another person…

Gino- A dream for some and a nightmare for others… Of course, many musicians now are out of work precisely because of these new situations, but it’s also true that when a record is released you can really listen to what the artist wanted to do..>>

– Hints of the future – The discussion continues on the different positions with respect to
the topic. The Kurtzwail, a keyboard that faithfully reproduces many sounds (the acoustic piano is impressive), the PPG, the Fairlight, are the ideal tools for creating live sounds that would otherwise be impossible to transport from the record to the show. Gino is particularly sensitive to the issue. He is a show animal, you can tell immediately. In the summer he will begin his American tour and will almost certainly
come to Europe, including Italy. He asks where the best places are. Not the huge spaces, but the theaters and tents where it is possible to take care of the acoustics, present himself and his music at their best. -< I miss the stage
a lot, I miss the people. I can’t wait to be able to set foot on it again. Even in Italy. It’s
my family’s country and I really feel this sensation of being almost at home. I would like to play here, to see the audience’s reactions. Sometimes this job is very tiring, but I couldn’t do without it. Long trips, TV shows, interviews. Well, all this doesn’t really bother me. I don’t think that being an artist outside the world is a good thing, I consider it paranoia.>

– Do you ever think you could do something else? -< Yes, I would like to try new paths…>

– Be an actor. … Yes (laughs), why not. I love
cinema.-

Would you write a soundtrack? – Oh, yes, I would like to have an opportunity, even if it hasn’t presented itself so far. I love films of a certain type, not bombastic ones like Spielberg or typically aesthetic ones like Coppola, but something really profound, without ending up in arthouse films which are, in the end, a bit boring, heavy. Today we live a fairly superficial existence, we don’t have emotions that make us think. That’s why cinema and music should be of help. I don’t want to be nostalgic, I don’t care about what I left behind, but I miss something serious. In America it’s like this, the kids are alone. Reagan pursues his politics of the rich, but ends up dazzling everyone a bit. In reality, perhaps only us thirty-year-olds still believe in certain things. –

The Sacred Monsters – Even in music, the sacred monsters of the past have ended up being eaten up by their own egocentrism and by the industry, and the new
emerging artists only stay on the surface, they make a good record and, very often, disappear. Where do you stand, humanly speaking? -< I’d like to know, I love music, I love this job, but I also love worrying about what’s happening. I’m afraid of war, I’m afraid that human beings are taking a lot of things lightly. And I’m often scared.>

– Do you love Joni Mitchell’s music? The direction she’s chosen? -< Sure, it’s among the best, among the most sensitive. It’s precisely the difference between those who have decided to quit and retreat home and those who always consider the option of carrying on. And in any case, only releasing the album when they’re sure they won’t do
anything stupid. Like Stevie Wonder, whom I adore. -<

You recently worked on the video for Black Cars. Did you make it
just for promotional use or were you involved in the idea of exploiting this vehicle, which is in some ways artistic? -< I made this video with the desire to try it too. Today it’s quite difficult to position oneself in the right way with respect to this means of communication. There’s no point in denying that it has a promotional value. You can send it anywhere without too many problems and excessive expenses, but I still wanted
to try an approach. I wanted it to be very simple, linear, not one of those sentimental stories you see, nor a science fiction product that competes with films. I worked three days and three nights, I slept very little just to be able to dedicate myself actively, but I don’t consider it as a form of great artistic expression. The song must always have a priority. I’m not an actor or anything like that, I’m a singer, a musician…>

– In the concerts of ’76/’77, your only From what I’ve seen, you preferred to be in the center of the stage and didn’t play any instrument. What instrument do
you compose with? – < Mainly the piano. But I feel like a singer. This way I express myself
with greater pleasure, even if I’m focused on my voice, on intonation, I still try to give
a direction to the musicians who are with me: I try to take many things into account at the same time…>

– So for you it’s like being reborn? < More or less that’s how I feel. I’ll make a confession: I already have the new songs ready for the next album. They’re all very beautiful, because they found me more confident. I can’t wait to get back in the studio…>

– It takes a good body to handle all this. Now the promotion, then the world tour,
then back in the studio – < Yes, but it’s important to have respect for yourself and I don’t like the category of crazy artists. I feel like I’m quite conscientious..> .
And it really couldn’t be more so: Gino doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, and doesn’t like drugs. But he sings rock ‘n’ roll. Of course he does.
