–Storm at Sunup– dove oltre agli immancabili Herb Alpert e Joe Vannelli compaiono musicisti del
Nel 1976 –Gist of the Gemini–
l’album –Brother to Brother-(Da fratello a fratello!) ottiene il meritato successo e Vannelli guadagna

Sinatra’80 ?

Gino Vannelli was born in Montreal, Canada, to parents of Apulian origins. Canada is one of the lands of the vast English-speaking territory, which has given birth to numerous musical talents. Joni Mitchell and Neil Young to name the most famous; Robert Charlesbois among the lesser-known; Oscar Peterson in jazz.
Inevitably, Canada is a cultural subject of the United States and so even the young Gino, like all those who want to escape the provincialism of the periphery of the empire, had to move to the West Coast, to Los Angeles. In an interview conducted by our William Donati, five years ago regarding marginalization, Vannelli said: – An artist must have the courage to escape from his native village and go where things happen… and it is better to be an idiot in Hollywood than a genius in Oklahoma – Genius in Montreal and certainly not an idiot in Los Angeles, if Herb Alpert, one of the heads of A&M, decided to immediately publish the material of Vannelli, and his brother. That of the brothers is a characteristic of Gino’s works. Alongside him from the beginning was Joe, a very talented keyboard player, who was later joined by Ross. All following the model of the young Italian-American, handsome, a little macho, Catholic and inextricably linked to the family. On these topics in the interview cited above, Vannelli intelligently said -… I can’t deny that I’m looking for a woman, like all men do. However, the main purpose of my life is music… we are very close among our relatives. It must be the Italian heritage that runs in our blood… – Thus Gino Vannelli entered the world of the musical business with the paternal supervision of trumpeter Herb Alpert. His first album, Crazy Life, was in 1973 but failed to make a breakthrough, perhaps because it was too refined, balanced between jazz and rock, with some symphonic references. Let’s remember that at the time the scene was still dominated by Crosby, Stills & Nash and psychedelic rock groups like Jefferson and the Grateful Dead.
The following year Gino Vannelli returned to the recording studio with Herb Alpert and released Powerful People , which received a nomination for the Grammy Awards, a sort of Oscar for song. In 1975 another LP – Storm at Sunup – where in addition to the inevitable Herb Alpert and Joe Vannelli appear musicians from the caliber of Sergio Pastora on percussion and Don Bailey on harmonica. In 1976 – Gist of the Gemini – and in 1977 – A Pauper in Paradise – where the symphonic nature that had characterized him since his first rehearsals found the most appropriate means of expression in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Finally in 1979 the album – Brother to Brother – (From brother to brother!) achieved the deserved success and Vannelli earned his first platinum record with – I Just Wanna stop – which ironically means – I’d just like to stop -. Indeed Vannelli stopped for a few years and after this reflection and the change of record company (he left A&M and signed with Arista), NightWalker was released; It’s 1981 and he needs a new break to conceive his best album: that Black Cars which is climbing the international charts and which will bring Gino Vannelli to the Olympus of celebrities just as they had predicted many years ago: to become the Frank Sinatra of the 80s.
