GINO VANNELLI
Certi suoi album fondamentali di quel periodo come <Gist of the Gemini> ,
<Pauper in Paradise> e soprattutto il formidabile <Brother to Brother > ,tutti
all’immagine di cantante -eroe in voga anni fa . Parlandoci abbiamo invece
Fu infatti
Anzi in certo miglioramento .

AUDIOREVIEW N.155 DECEMBER 1995
MUSICIANS SECTION
GINO VANNELLI
Canadian singer Gino Vannelli was one of my youthful idols.
His blend of rock and jazz, his unmistakable voice, and his highly
original songs won me over in the mid-1970s.
Strangely enough, Vannelli is an artist who has been very poorly served by the music market.
Some of his key albums from that period, such as <Gist of the Gemini>,
<Pauper in Paradise>, and especially the formidable <Brother to Brother>, all
on A&M, have never been reissued at a moderate price in Europe, unlike
many much less well-known artists, and are only available on the
American and/or Canadian markets, his homeland.
Vannelli has recently returned to the market with a very beautiful album in which he sings
jazz like a consummate crooner. We met him during his
Italian tour. Vannelli, with his long mane, seemed a bit dated, tied
to the image of a hero-singer that was in vogue years ago. Speaking to him, we
discovered a young man who is still simple and enthusiastic about his work,
very close to his family—brothers Joe and Ross have always been among his
most important collaborators—and very happy with his popularity throughout
Europe and in Italy, his parents’ homeland. It should not be forgotten
that Vannelli owes a lot to Europe, to France in particular. It was in fact
the Dreyfus label that rescued the artist after the turbulent termination of his
contract with the American label Arista and a few dark years. From there came
<Black Cars>, the relaunch album with strong rock overtones, and then his more recent albums.
In the show that Gino Vannelli is currently touring, he leaves out no
phase of his long career, from the glorious days of <Brother To Brother> to the
rock atmospheres of a few years ago, to his new, elegant and refined version
of a jazz musician, well represented by his latest excellent album. One of the best from this Canadian, who is still in great form. Indeed, he is certainly improving.
