MILAN, Alcatraz, April 7, 1999: Gino Vannelli bids farewell to Italy with a thrilling show. While I would have preferred other venues for Toto and DiFranco, this one was completely satisfied: excellent acoustics, freedom of movement, and a truly enjoyable evening. I knew the artist through his records, but I didn’t think he’d amaze me again: when you say there’s talent… A jazzy atmosphere dominated the entire performance, which celebrated the refined taste of all the musicians. Bass, drums, percussion, wind instruments, keyboards, and piano complemented Vannelli’s splendid voice. Not only distinctive, but well-trained, truly used as an instrument. The artists were in perfect harmony, clearly mastering their timing this time, the solos were refined, not too invasive. Perhaps it’s a matter of taste: some people like women they can undress with their eyes (without too much effort), others like femininity. Francois D’Amours was in my opinion one of the highlights of the show, playing commendably soprano, alto, tenor saxophone and flute.
